“Manternacher Fields – A walk through the “Amazonas of Luxembourg”

Fresh green leaves, a HIGH humidity and lianas hanging down from the trees. Tarzan was the only thing missing from making us believe we were walking in a jungle.

The 20th of May was a HOT and sunny Sunday when 15 participators met up in Manternach which is a nature reserve since year 2000.

The walk was pretty strenuous due to partly very muddy path – two steps forward and one slip back. After climbing the steps we had a break and admire the views and some refreshments, in the form of homemade “Maitrank”. During the walk we were passing some old Mills along the river Syre, a headless Fire Salamander (dead…), we discovered The Bird’s-nest Orchid, “Neottia nidus-avis” an orchid without color and Orchis mascula.

On our way back we passed a big area with nowadays more or less forgotten old terraced vineyards. Coming back to Manternach using an aqueduct, we all gathered for a treat, some bread, cheese, fig marmalade, water/juice.
